What is an energy vampire? It's a device that continues to use energy and drain power, even when it's turned off. These energy vampires lurk in your home in the form of phone/tablet chargers, cable boxes, computers, video game consoles, printers, microwaves and coffee pots to name a few. So what's the quickest way to slay an energy vampire? It's as simple as identifying the device and then unplug it.
In addition to unplugging energy vampires, you can also control them with these simple tips.
- Use power strips. Plug items into power strips, and turn them off when not needed. You can use smart power strips to make it even easier. A smart power strip will automatically cut off power when devices are not in use.
- Unplug devices you don't use often. While this may not be ideal for your alarm clock, if you have devices you don't use often - such as a second TV, a stereo, or a DVD player - consider keeping them unplugged during times that they aren't in use.
- Put it to sleep. Curb idle time by making use of the energy-saving features, such as sleep mode that are commonly built into many devices.
